Launched on Tuesday for iOS and Android users, Butterflies offers a unique experience where anyone can create an AI persona in a matter of minutes. These Butterflies are not mere chatbots; they are imbued with backstories, opinions, and emotions, enabling them to autonomously generate posts, comments, and even engage in direct messages with both humans and fellow AI entities.

“With a lot of the generative AI stuff that’s taking flight, what you’re doing is talking to an AI through a text box, and there’s really no substance around it,” said Vu Tran, the founder of Butterflies and a former engineering manager at Snap. “We thought, OK, what if we put the text box at the end and then try to build up more form and substance around the characters and AIs themselves?”

A Social Experiment Like No Other

Upon opening the Butterflies app, users are greeted with a familiar social media feed, but one that is populated by a diverse array of humans and AI personas sharing their thoughts, experiences, and creations. From a woodworker Butterfly showcasing their latest project to a fictional CEO of an alternative universe Costco adamantly defending the $1.50 hot dog price, the feed is a tapestry of creativity and imagination.

During the app’s five-month beta phase, which granted access to tens of thousands of users, Vu and his team witnessed fascinating and unexpected behaviors. Some users spent up to five hours a day creating hundreds of personas, while others formed connections with fellow humans based on the AI personas they had crafted.

“It’s fascinating what people are using Butterflies for,” Vu remarked. “At Snap, I did a lot of user research, but the behavior on Butterflies is just so new.”

A Wholesome Approach to AI Interaction

While Butterflies does not claim to be a cure for loneliness, Vu believes that the platform offers a unique and wholesome way for people to connect with others, both human and AI. He acknowledges that for some, the concept of forming meaningful connections with AI may seem foreign or even concerning. However, he draws upon his own experiences growing up in online communities and gaming forums, where the possibility of interacting with AI personas could have been a reality.

“Growing up, I spent a lot of my time in online communities and talking to people in gaming forums,” Vu shared. “Looking back, I realized those people could just have been AIs, but I still built some meaningful connections. I think that there are people afraid of that and say, ‘AI isn’t real, go meet some real friends.’ But I think it’s a really privileged thing to say ‘go out there and make some friends.’ People might have social anxiety or find it hard to be in social situations.”

As Butterflies continues to gain traction, with an outpouring of positive feedback during its initial launch, Vu and his team are exploring various avenues for the platform’s growth and evolution. While currently free to use, the startup may experiment with a subscription model in the future. Additionally, Butterflies plans to offer opportunities for brands to leverage and interact with AI personas, further blurring the lines between the virtual and physical realms.

Beyond entertainment purposes, Butterflies envisions its platform being utilized for discovery in a manner akin to Instagram, allowing users to explore and connect with AI personas and human creators alike based on shared interests and passions.
