The MI350 and MI400 Series: AMD’s Future AI Chip Roadmap

Looking beyond the MI325X, AMD provided a glimpse into its future AI chip roadmap, unveiling the upcoming MI350 and MI400 series. The MI350, expected to arrive in 2025, will be based on a new chip architecture and promises to deliver a staggering 35 times better performance in inference – the process of computing generative AI responses – compared to AMD’s currently available MI300 series.

Not resting on its laurels, AMD also teased the MI400 series, slated for release in 2026 and built upon an architecture codenamed “Next.” While details on the MI400 series remain scarce, AMD’s ambitious product roadmap signals its unwavering commitment to closing the performance gap with Nvidia in the AI chip market.

While the spotlight shines brightly on AMD’s AI chip advancements, the company’s ambitions extend beyond the data center market. At Computex, AMD also unveiled details about its latest generation of central processing units (CPUs), which are expected to hit the market in the second half of 2024.

Additionally, AMD detailed the architecture for its new neural processing units (NPUs), dedicated to handling on-device AI tasks in AI-enabled personal computers (PCs). As chipmakers bank on added AI capabilities to revive the stagnant PC market, AMD’s NPUs position the company to capitalize on this emerging trend.

Major PC providers, such as HP and Lenovo, have already announced plans to release devices incorporating AMD’s AI PC chips, further solidifying the company’s position in the AI-driven PC revolution.
